2024年为中国龙年,我的一些作品转入了对于“龙”这一意象的传达。龙是中国人骨子里带有的象征,绵延千年。
这幅作品以“面纱”作为主要表现方式,旨在限制公众对其主体人物进行过多的了解,这样的做法给画面制作了一种张力。
我试图使得这个女性主体与观众之间保持距离,这个作品触及的是种族和性别问题,是探索与身份相关的可见与不可见,以及其他的不确定性和冲突性。我以这样的方式,将西方对于东方文化的攻击、歧视和疏离的显意识和潜意识综合在一起。
就“凝视”这一精神分析论述,我将整个作品置于一种“灭迹的凝视”(gaze of obliteration)中,揭露西方主流文化建构下滋生的这种“凝视”,讽刺当今这种“抹掉身体的在场,否定内在性”的行为,以及反对为了实施社会控制而进行的数据收集——因为它抹除了个人的存在。
而作为东方象征的龙,摒除了以男性为尊的“龙”的形象,换以女性形象来创作,揭示了中国文化与女性群体长期被奴役、压制、征服、禁锢的处境。中国文化和女性经历了不可想象的悲惨——被当成财物而存在,被利用作为生产和再生产的工具,被强大的暴力行为同化和驯化着。
我使用遮面女人的形象,是为了反映出西方主流社会拒绝把东方女性和中国文化当成主体去了解的现状。并让“她”以单薄的姿态置身于花朵中,目的是要讨论脆弱性和支配性的关系,对涉及白人男性凝视的旧有观念进行颠覆,对观众习以为常的白人性(whiteness)提出质疑。
我把“龙”以女性为主体的做法,是一种“雄性去崇高化”的做法,而“面纱”是我用来隐喻文化控制的意象——你可以看到的,还有你看不到的……这也是关于自我认知和放逐的个人和集体悲剧的一种诗意化的警示。
2024 is the year of the Loong in China, and some of my works turn to convey the image of "Loong". The Loong is a symbol in the souls of the Chinese people, which lasts for thousands of years.
This work uses the "veil" as the main form of expression, which aims to limit the public's over-understanding of its main character, which creates a kind of tension to the picture.
I try to keep the female subject at a distance from the audience. This work touches on race and gender, and explores identity-related visibility and invisibility, as well as other uncertainties and conflicts. In this way, I combine the conscious and subconscious of Western attacks, discrimination and alienation on Eastern cultures.
With regard to the psychoanalytic exposition of "gaze", I put the whole work in a kind of "gaze of obliteration", exposing this kind of "gaze" bred by the construction of western mainstream culture, satirizing today's behavior of "erasing the presence of the body, denying internality", and opposing data collection for the purpose of social control-because it erases the existence of the individual.
As the symbol of the East, the Loong removes the image of the male-oriented Loong and creates it with the female image, which reveals the situation that Chinese culture and female groups have been enslaved, suppressed, conquered and imprisoned for a long time. Chinese culture and women have experienced unimaginable misery-being as property, being used as a tool for production and reproduction, and assimilated and domesticated by powerful acts of violence.
I use the image of a masked woman to reflect the current situation that the mainstream western society refuses to take eastern women and Chinese culture as the main body to understand. And let "she" in a thin posture in the flowers, the purpose is to discuss the relationship between fragility and dominance, to subvert the old concepts involving the gaze of white men, and to question the whiteness that the audience is used to.
My practice of taking women as the main body of "Loong" is a way of "male de-worship", and "veil" is an image I use as a metaphor for cultural control-what you can see, and what you can't see. It is also a poetic warning about the individual and collective tragedies of self-awareness and exile.
