作品描述

This is a painting from a trip to Guizhou to paint in the countryside. The moment I saw this woman, I felt the incredible distance and difference between us in culture, history, background, and experience. I could have no way to comprehend everything she’d seen and done in her life, and because of language differences I couldn’t even ask her. However, I was able to sit in front of her and look at her for 6 hours, trying to capture just a little of what I saw in her. As she sat quietly and looked at me, what was she thinking about? What did she think of me? Was there anything she wanted to say to me?
Though I don’t know her name, her age, or anything else except where she lives, there was so much in her face and posture that spoke. I became quite focused on her eyes and her hands, there were so many stories in her eyes, so many years of hard work in her her hands. A woman’s hands do so much during their lifetime, beginning with holding her mother and father’s hands, then learning, working, cooking, holding her lover, holding her baby, feeding her children, holding their hands, perhaps grabbing them to pull them out of harm’s way, demonstrating skills for them to learn, holding their children in her hands, etc etc.
It’s impossible to know all that a pair of hands has done in a lifetime, but sometimes I sit and wonder what someone has used their hands to do. I think hands are beautiful, and this woman’s hands were exceptional. She is in the autumn of her life, gradually passing the world she is a part of to the next generation, and as she sat before me I could only feel her warm heart and great dignity, which inspires me to live a better life and paint better, to become a woman with a warm heart and great dignity, who’s hands have done all they can to make this world a better place for the ones I love.

这是一幅去贵州下乡作的画。看到这个妇女的那一刻，我感受到了我们之间在文化、历史、背景和经历上的不可思议的距离和差异。我无法理解她在生活中所见所闻所做的一切，而且由于语言差异，我甚至无法和她聊天。然而，我能够坐在她面前看她 6 个小时，试图捕捉到我在她身上看到的一点点感受。她静静地坐着，看着我，在想什么？她对我有什么看法？她有什么想对我说的吗？

不可能知道一双手一生所做的一切，但有时我会坐下来想知道有人用他们的手做了什么。我觉得手很漂亮，而这个女人的手十分了得。她正处于生命的秋天，逐渐将她所处的世界传递给下一代。但是她坐在我面前，我只能感受到她温暖的心和举止无比的端详，这激励着我过更有意义的生活和追求更有意义的画画，成为一个拥有温暖的心和举止端庄的女人，用我的双手竭尽全力让这个世界成为我所爱的人能享受的更美好的地方。
