In 2019 I became aware of the terrible war and famine happening in Yemen, which has caused countless women and children to face starvation daily. I was struck by a photo of a very thin woman holding her emaciated son on her lap, looking down with him with no hope or life left in her eyes. It is obvious from her own starved face that she has given all her own food to her son, but still he is obviously almost starved to death. The devastating effects of conflict on the citizens of a country are sad and very unnecessary in this world in which so many people live in overabundant wealth and comfort.
As a mother, I also feel her pain and the pain of the Yemen women that they cannot do the most natural thing that any mother yearns to do, that is to feed her child. Instead, they have to witness the slow and painful death of their children, completely powerless to do anything to help them. I hope that this is a reality that more people can face and rise up to help fight against in our modern world.
