Biography

David is an English artist living, working and exhibiting between the UK and China. Throughout his art education in England David’s interest lay in painting and drawing. He focused his attention on painting in college then went on to complete a BA in fine art painting at loughborough university England in 2006. He has continued to produce work in both China and England drawing inspiration from both locations. He has until recently focused on figurative painting but became more engaged in the act and process of applying the medium.

Artist statement

I never really know where a painting is truly going and that’s the exciting part for me. I never set out to have a final destination for the work as I don’t want my painting to reach a final resting place. I want my work to create more questions, not answers. I want people to look and think where is this going and where did it begin. When talking about my work I often refer to them as landscapes still under construction. The paintings draw upon a large collection of source material, from photography, digital sketches, music to sculpture and all these things are translated into texture, colour and gestural marks. All the elements work with each other and against each other as they battle for space within the different layers. Chance and design permeates the work and building the work can feel like a balancing act, it’s this interplay between design and accident that I think drive the pieces.
